Police: Infant might have been under the influence

A 10-month-old baby was turned over to Child Protective Services Sunday after Seattle police said its mother was breast-feeding him with narcotics and drug paraphernalia in the house.

A 10-month-old baby was turned over to Child Protective Services on Sunday after police said its mother was breast-feeding him with narcotics and drug paraphernalia in the house.

Seattle police said they were called to a house in the 4300 block of 15th Avenue South on Sunday to investigate a disturbance. The caller, a 27-year-old who was breast-feeding her baby, was "highly intoxicated," police said.

Police said the disturbance was not related to domestic violence, but police removed the baby from the home because they said he might have been under the influence of the intoxicants found in the house.

"The baby was also not responding appropriately to his environment, and the officers investigating reasonably believed it may have been under the influence of intoxicants," police said. "The officers felt that the baby was endangered and the environment wasn't safe."

The baby was taken to the South Precinct, where his condition was screened by Seattle Fire Department medics. The child was later transported to Seattle Children's hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Child Protective Services met officers at the hospital and took custody of the child.
