WASHINGTON —

Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire has joined Kansas Gov. Mark Parkinson in the nation's capital to announce a bipartisan coalition to support Boeing's bid for an Air Force contract to produce a fleet of new tanker planes.

Gregoire and Parkinson said Monday the tanker coalition includes business and labor groups, as well as the governors of Oregon, Maine, Iowa, Utah, Missouri, Illinois and Connecticut. Gregoire says awarding the contract to Boeing will ensure work for 40,000 to 50,000 people across the country. Parkinson says Boeing's proposal is the best choice for the U.S. military.

Boeing has been competing with Northrop Grumman for a contract worth at least $35 billion to build 179 refueling planes.

Boeing would use the 767 airframe. Northrop Grumman would use an Airbus plane.
