Capitol Lake snails to be flushed with saltwater

State officials plan to drain Capitol Lake at Olympia then fill it with salt water from Budd Inlet in an attempt to control an invasive species, the New Zealand mudsnail.

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

State officials plan to drain Capitol Lake at Olympia then fill it with salt water from Budd Inlet in an attempt to control an invasive species, the New Zealand mudsnail.

The Olympian reports state agencies have approved the flush on high tides late this month and early March. They hope to prevent the tiny snails from spreading to other lakes.

Scientists from state agencies will study the effectiveness of saltwater for killing the snails and monitor damage to other animals and plants.
