Bellingham man who killed woman also killed self

A man who shot and killed his ex-girlfriend in Bellingham died by his own hand, not police gunfire.

BELLINGHAM, Wash. —

A man who shot and killed his ex-girlfriend in Bellingham died by his own hand, not police gunfire.

Whatcom County Medical Examiner Gary Goldfogel said Monday that 55-year-old Daniel Salas died from a self-inflicted handgun wound to the head.

The Bellingham Herald reports a police officer had fired about the same time Salas put a gun to his head. Goldfogel said no police bullets struck Salas.

Before he shot himself Friday, Salas killed 39-year-old Tawnia Costan of Bellingham. Goldfogel said she died of multiple gunshot wounds to the back.

It was the second murder-suicide in Whatcom County this year. On Jan. 6, Sean D. Wilson fatally shot 14-year-old Felicity Boonstra and himself at his Peaceful Valley home.
