Workers at Pike Place Market authorize a strike

Unionized workers at Pike Place Market voted Thursday to authorize a strike, the first step to a potential walkout by service workers at the city's premier tourist destination.

Unionized workers at Pike Place Market voted Thursday to authorize a strike, the first step to a potential walkout by service workers at the city's premier tourist destination.

However, a mediation session between Teamsters Local 117 and the Public Development Authority, which operates the market, is scheduled for Monday.

Union members would have to vote again before going out on the picket line, according to Teamsters spokesman Paul Zilly.

Maintenance workers, security and parking attendants are among the members of Local 117. They have been working for the PDA without a contract for 16 months, Zilly said.

The workers and the PDA disagree about issues such as merit pay and a change in maintenance-worker job classifications, he said.
