Highway 18 reopens today after last week's landslide

Both travel lanes of State Route 18 were reopened to traffic at 3:25 a.m. today near Auburn after state highway contractor crews worked through the weekend cleaning up debris from a landslide.

Both travel lanes of State Route 18 were reopened to traffic at 3:25 a.m. today near Auburn after state highway contractor crews worked through the weekend cleaning up debris from a landslide.

The highway, a busy truck and commuter route, was closed at 10:40 p.m. Thursday when landslides triggered by heavy rains slung mud, rocks and trees across the westbound lanes, and slopped up against the concrete barrier separating west and eastbound traffic.

Cleaning up was just the first step; more work will be needed to design a permanent fix for the slumping hillside, according to the state highway department.
