A King County sheriff's deputy is in serious condition, but expected to survive, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after being hit by a car late yesterday afternoon on the Maple Valley Highway.

Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. John Urquhart said the deputy was working on a report of a kidnapping — which turned out to be a hoax — on the 18600 block of the highway, also known as Highway 169, when he was struck by a car at 4:50 p.m.

Urquhart said the deputy was on foot, set to cross the road to where the boy was standing. The boy had reported his bike stolen, that he'd been kidnapped and dropped off at that location, Urquhart said

Because a minor was involved, Urquhart said, charges of filing a false report were unlikely.
