Pierce Co settles lawsuit over injured patient

Pierce County is paying $1.3 million to settle a lawsuit over the injuries suffered by a mentally disturbed patient who hurt himself escaping out a window of a county-owned mental hospital.

TACOMA, Wash. —

Pierce County is paying $1.3 million to settle a lawsuit over the injuries suffered by a mentally disturbed patient who hurt himself escaping out a window of a county-owned mental hospital.

Superior Court documents say that in the 2004 incident, 27-year-old Jeffrey Fontinel was in a seclusion room on the hospital's fifth floor when he climbed out a window and tried to jump 15 to 20 feet to a fire escape landing. He suffered multiple fractures in the fall. Attorneys for Fontinel and his family allege he was not adequately monitored by staff at the now-closed Puget Sound Hospital.

The settlement was reached Dec. 23.
