Impact statement on Seattle bridge project signed

A proposed replacement for the decaying South Park Bridge is now a "shovel-ready" project.

A proposed replacement for the decaying South Park Bridge is now a "shovel-ready" project.

The new $160 million drawbridge's final environmental-impact statement was signed Friday, a move government officials said should improve King County's odds of winning a $99 million stimulus grant through the TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) program.

The Duwamish River span serves a low-income neighborhood, many industries and truckers.

Despite the bridge's condition, a grant is no certainty, because requests total $57 billion for a total $2.1 billion available from TIGER and a related fund.

If the project were to win the federal money, construction could begin in the spring and last two years, said Linda Dougherty, county roads director.

More information is available at www.kingcounty.gov/transportation/TIGERGrant.aspx.
