A tanker truck carrying a load of liquid carbon dioxide crashed into an overpass of Highway 167, closing the roadway in both directions during rush hour.

The truck, driven by a 46-year-old man from Auburn, hit the 24th Street East overpass around 5:45 p.m. The State Patrol, initially believing the truck carried a flammable liquid, closed the highway and diverted traffic.

Southbound traffic reopened before 9 p.m., but northbound traffic remained disrupted late Tuesday. The truck driver was in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center.
