3 climbers reported missing on Mount Hood

PORTLAND — Rescue crews were searching for three climbers missing on Mount Hood after they sent a text message early this morning.

PORTLAND — Rescue crews were searching for three climbers missing on Mount Hood after they sent a text message early this morning.

The Clackamas County sheriff's office said the climbers, two men and one woman, are experienced and well-equipped.

The sheriff's spokesman, Detective Jim Strovink, said the trio were making a technical ascent of the mountain on the west side near Reid Glacier.

The glacier ranges in elevation from about 6,000 feet to 9,800 feet. The upper extent of the glacier is known for extensive crevasses.

The three climbers were expected back at 2 p.m. Friday. They do not have a radio beacon but they do have a cell phone, and sent a text message at 1 a.m. Saturday.

Strovink said rescue crews were trying to determine what the message said.
