Atheists, Jews apply for Capitol holiday displays

A Seattle atheist group and a Jewish group are applying to put up holiday displays on the Capitol campus in Olympia again this year.

The Associated Press

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

A Seattle atheist group and a Jewish group are applying to put up holiday displays on the Capitol campus in Olympia again this year.

A spokesman from Seattle Atheists says the sign they want to post is less provocative than last year's display by a Wisconsin-based group.

They want an outdoor sign that says, "In this holiday season let us remember that kindness, charity and goodwill transcend belief, creed or religion."

Chabad of Washington hopes to put up a 9-foot electric menorah nearby.

Indoor holiday displays by private groups are banned this year under a new state policy.

So far, there have been no applications for Christmas displays but the state of Washington has put up its holiday tree.
