KALAMA, Wash. —

Kalama, Wash., police say a 40-year-old Chehalis man was killed when his pickup truck was hit by a northbound Union Pacific freight train in the Columbia River town.

The Cowlitz County Coroner's office identified the victim as Michael L. Turpin.

Police say that at about 2:10 a.m. Saturday, the truck stopped on the tracks with its lights off. Officers say the vehicle appeared to have driven through a parking area to a spot where there was no railroad crossing.

Union Pacific officials say crew members aboard the 13-car train were not hurt.
