Traffic cameras to be added in West Seattle, Ballard and Sodo

Nearly five dozen new closed-circuit traffic cameras designed to relay real-time information to the Seattle Transportation Department's traffic-management center and to a travelers-information Web site will be in use by next spring, nearly doubling the number of cameras now in use in Seattle, transportation officials said.

Fifty-seven new cameras are to be installed in Ballard and West Seattle, and in the Sodo area and the city center.

Besides monitoring traffic, the traffic-management center uses real-time information to remotely adjust traffic-signal timing and bridge functions.
