Thousands of tax-refund checks undeliverable
The Internal Revenue Service is looking for the owners of 2,652 tax refund checks sent to Washington state and returned undeliverable. The average refund is $1,099.
The Internal Revenue Service is looking for the owners of 2,652 tax-refund checks — nearly half of them from King and Snohomish counties — that were sent to Washington residents and returned as undeliverable.
The average refund is $1,099, according to Judy Monahan, regional spokeswoman for the IRS.
To get their refund checks, taxpayers can go online to www.irs.gov and update their addresses using the "Where's My Refund?" tool, according to the IRS. Taxpayers have to submit their Social Security number, filing status and amount of refund on their 2008 return to find out the status of their refund.
Taxpayers without Internet access can call 800-829-1954.
Nationwide, the IRS has 107,831 refund checks totaling $123.5 million that were returned undeliverable by the Postal Service.
Taxpayers can avoid delays by making sure their change-of-address form matches the name and address they put on their tax return, according to the IRS.
