Hanford employment to peak in 2010

The Energy Department predicts employment at the Hanford nuclear reservation will peak at 10,800 next year then begin to decline as clean-up work is completed.

TRI-CITIES, Wash. —

The Energy Department predicts employment at the Hanford nuclear reservation will peak at 10,800 next year then begin to decline as clean-up work is completed.

The Tri-City Herald reports the projection was requested by the Tri-City Development Council to help long-term planning for schools and utilities.

Council vice president Gary Petersen says employment at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory should be a stabilizing influence on the local economy. The lab has about 4,600 employees. Only 7 percent of the lab's research is tied to Hanford, although 66 percent is for the Energy Department.
