Seattle will experiment with more-frequent service this week on its South Lake Union streetcar, to make the line more appealing to riders.

On Thursday and Friday, trains will arrive every 12 1/2 minutes, instead of the normal 15-minute interval, according to notices inside the streetcars. "We're going to see if we can do it for next year, to anticipate more ridership as people move into the South Lake Union area," said Marybeth Turner, a city transportation spokeswoman.
Two trains typically run on the 1.3-mile line. Ridership isn't high enough to justify a third train, but having just two trains makes the service infrequent, possibly discouraging some would-be users. An average 1,325 people a day take a streetcar ride, according to city data.
