Woodland Park Zoo euthanizes ailing giraffe

A giraffe at the Woodland Park Zoo was put down today because of poor health related to bone disease, according to zoo officials.

A giraffe at the Woodland Park Zoo was put down today because of poor health related to bone disease, according to zoo officials.

The 13-year-old reticulated giraffe, called Johari, had had chronic joint problems since he was brought to Seattle from a zoo in Colorado in 1998.

A necropsy will be done, which is standard procedure.

In the wild, the life expectancy of giraffes is 10 to 15 years, but due to a variety of factors, including better care, nutrition, management and increased medical knowledge, giraffes in zoos can live up to 25 years.

The zoo has another male giraffe and two female giraffes.
