Water Taxi ridership up 21%

The West Seattle Water Taxi saw its ridership increase 21 percent this year.

The West Seattle Water Taxi saw its ridership increase 21 percent this year.

The summertime boat, which has traveled between West Seattle and downtown since 1998, carried more than 200,000 passengers this year, and the 47,000 passengers in July set the record as the top ridership month in the history of the water taxi.

Ridership has increased 90 percent over the past five years.

Starting in April, the county hopes to begin operating the taxi year-round. It has to come up with $250,000 to have year-around service, but officials hope it will come from mitigation money for replacing the Alaskan Way Viaduct.
