Wash. state board considers school intervention

On the agenda at the State Board of Education this week is a proposal for state intervention in failing schools.

The Associated Press

VANCOUVER, Wash. —

On the agenda at the State Board of Education this week is a proposal for state intervention in failing schools.

Current state policy allows troubled schools to volunteer for state help and support programs, but they are not required to ask for help.

The proposal being discussed in Vancouver, Wash., would direct state education officials to conduct an academic audit of districts that consistently fail to meet state standards. Then the local school board would need to create an improvement plan that would need State Board of Education approval. The local school board would be held responsible for completing the plan.

The proposal could be part of Washington's application for a federal innovation grant under the "Race to the Top" program.
