Ferry system: Aug. accident cost $327,000

Washington State Ferries says repairs and substitute boats cost $327,000 after the ferry Wenatchee ran into Seattle's Colman dock on Aug. 30 in foggy weather.

SEATTLE —

Washington State Ferries says repairs and substitute boats cost $327,000 after the ferry Wenatchee ran into Seattle's Colman dock on Aug. 30 in foggy weather.

The 206-car Wenatchee, on a run from Bainbridge Island, was taken out of service for five days. Spokeswoman Marta Coursey says fixing the Wenatchee's bow cost $180,000. The system had to shuffle several boats to cover for the Wenatchee, and paid $122,000 to lease two passenger-only ferries to help fill the gaps. The accident also damaged the terminal slip.

Investigations by the Coast Guard and ferry system determined the accident was caused by human error, with speed, poor visibility and a breakdown in communications playing a role.
