Wash. state senator to be King Co. exec's deputy

State Sen. Fred Jarrett, D-Mercer Island, is leaving the Legislature to become chief deputy for new King County Executive Dow Constantine.

The Associated Press

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

State Sen. Fred Jarrett, D-Mercer Island, is leaving the Legislature to become chief deputy for new King County Executive Dow Constantine.

Jarrett unsuccessfully ran against Constantine in the primary, but has recently been serving as co-chairman of his transition team. The former Mercer Island mayor served three terms in the state House as a Republican, but switched parties and was elected senator as a Democrat in 2008.

Jarrett says he'll miss working in the Legislature, but is excited by the new opportunity.

Local party officials will field a replacement for Jarrett. The senior House member from the 41st District is House Transportation Chairwoman Judy Clibborn, D-Mercer Island. But Clibborn says she's not interested in the Senate seat.
