Stormy weather to continue today in the Seattle area

The extreme weather that took the life of a Shoreline man on Thursday is expected to continue today.

Wind, rain, hail, lightning, thunder and even a funnel cloud visited the Seattle area Friday, the day after a similar storm led to the death of a Shoreline man.

The National Weather Service was forecasting wind, showers and scattered thunderstorms for today in the Seattle area. Some thunderstorms were expected to produce small hail.

Meteorologist Johnny Burg said the weather should begin to calm down Sunday.

Thursday night, Patrick R. Duff, 32, was killed instantly about 7 p.m. when part of a tree fell on him while he and his wife walked their dog in Hamlin Park, at 15th Avenue Northeast near Northeast 160th Street in Shoreline.

Shoreline Director of Parks Dick Deal said the tree that killed Duff was an apparently healthy white pine, one of thousands of trees in the park. He said a limb from the top snapped off during the windstorm and fell, striking Duff.

Amid the repeat of extreme weather Friday, KING-TV reported a funnel cloud over Enumclaw.

The weekend is also expected to bring snow to the Olympics, Cascades and the mountains in northeast Washington. A winter storm watch is in effect through today for the Cascades, with up to 2 feet of snow forecast.

Forecasters also say there will be big swells on the Washington coast, up to 25 feet or higher, and there is a high-surf warning there.
