Portland, Ore., woman among Fort Hood wounded

A brother of a 47-year-old woman who grew up in Portland says Capt. Dorothy "Dorrie" Carskadon is among those wounded in the mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas.

PORTLAND, Ore. —

A brother of a 47-year-old woman who grew up in Portland says Capt. Dorothy "Dorrie" Carskadon is among those wounded in the mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas.

Trey Carskadon tells The Oregonian that his sister was shot twice in the hip and underwent surgery at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood. He spoke to a nurse in the intensive-care unit Friday, who said his sister was lucid and in good spirits and doing pretty well.

Although Carskadon did not know the full extent of his sister's injuries, he said she is expected to recover.

Dorothy Carskadon was with the Army in Iraq during Operation Desert Storm and then enlisted in the Army Reserve two years ago. She was about to deploy to Iraq to counsel troops suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Her brother calls her "our hero" and says she has "an uncommon sense of public service. She had elected for no other reason than to serve her fellow soldiers to re-enlist and get back into the fray."

An Army psychiatrist is accused of opening fire on his fellow soldiers, killing 13 and wounding 30 on Thursday.
