McGinn widens lead over Mallahan for Seattle mayor

Environmentalist Mike McGinn has widened his lead over cell phone executive Joe Mallahan to 2,384 votes in the race for Seattle mayor.

The Associated Press

SEATTLE —

Environmentalist Mike McGinn has widened his lead over cell phone executive Joe Mallahan to 2,384 votes in the race for Seattle mayor.

King County released updated vote totals twice Friday. The first update increased McGinn's lead to 1,209 votes and the Friday night tally put McGinn even further ahead. On Thursday, McGinn's lead was just 515 votes.

Thousands of votes remain to be counted next week.

State law requires a recount if the margin is fewer than 2,000 votes and less than one-half of 1 percent of the total vote.

In the August primary, McGinn and Mallahan finished ahead of incumbent Mayor Greg Nickels.
