The Associated Press
Environmentalist Mike McGinn has widened his lead over cell phone executive Joe Mallahan to 1,209 votes in the race for Seattle mayor.
King County released a new count of 20,000 ballots Friday that more than doubled the 515-vote lead McGinn held on Thursday. More results were expected Friday evening, and thousands of votes remain to be counted next week.
State law requires a recount if the margin is fewer than 2,000 votes and less than one-half of 1 percent of the total vote.
In the August primary, McGinn and Mallahan finished ahead of incumbent Mayor Greg Nickels.
