Spokane River cleanup plan draws criticism

A proposal to reduce phosphorus pollution in the Spokane River over the next decade has drawn criticism from business, government and environmental groups.

SPOKANE, Wash. —

A proposal to reduce phosphorus pollution in the Spokane River over the next decade has drawn criticism from business, government and environmental groups.

In comments to the state Ecology Department, Inland Empire Paper Co. says new pollution limits might put it out of business.

City officials in Idaho say Washington regulators are overstepping their authority. And, environmentalists say the plan fails to set an accurate limit on phosphorus in the river.

The Spokesman-Review reports the department will decide whether to forward the plan to the federal Environmental Protection Agency.

The plan would cost about $500 million over a decade to upgrade sewage treatment plants and control industrial discharges.
