Vet: Ducks near Lynden, Wash., died from fungus

A Washington state Fish and Wildlife veterinarian says more than 250 ducks found dead near Lynden apparently ate moldy grain and died of a fungal disease.

The Associated Press

BELLINGHAM, Wash. —

A Washington state Fish and Wildlife veterinarian says more than 250 ducks found dead near Lynden apparently ate moldy grain and died of a fungal disease.

Kristin Mansfield says necropsies done on some of the ducks showed signs of aspergillosis, a fungal infection that can cause pneumonia in birds. She says it's not contagious.

The Bellingham Herald reports the ducks, mostly mallards and pintails, were found Oct. 26 by a Fish and Wildlife survey team near Wiser Lake and the Bylsma Levee on the Nooksack River.
