Wash. Initiative 1033 losing in early returns

Early returns show voters soundly defeating Initiative 1033, which would limit government revenue, cut property taxes, and put tax hikes on the ballot.

Early returns show voters soundly defeating Initiative 1033, which would limit government revenue, cut property taxes, and put tax hikes on the ballot.

With about 40 percent of the expected vote counted Tuesday night, I-1003 was losing 56 percent to 44 percent.

The measure was sponsored by anti-tax activist Tim Eyman. He said it was needed to make sure city, county and state governments grow at a sustainable rate coming out of the recession.

The opposition campaign included elected officials, labor unions and big business. They said government was already struggling, with big drop-offs in tax revenue and cuts to public services.
