Spokane mayor proposes 15 percent sewer rate hike

It may cost Spokane residents more to flush their toilets.

The Associated Press

SPOKANE, Wash. —

It may cost Spokane residents more to flush their toilets.

The budget Mayor Mary Verner submitted Monday to the city council calls for a 15 percent increase in sewage service.

A study says Spokane will need about $750 million in the next two decades to increase capacity and meet environmental regulations.

The Spokesman-Review review reports the same study says the city will need another 15 percent rate increase in 2011 and a 14 percent increase in 2012.

If the council approves this year's hike, a typical homeowner in Spokane would pay about $34 a month for sewer service.
