A soldier from Spokane was among the seven killed in an MH-47 helicopter crash in Darreh-ye Bum, Afghanistan, on Monday, the Department of Defense announced Thursday.
Chief Warrant Officer Niall Lyons, 40, was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Regiment (Airborne) at Hunter Army Airfield in Georgia.
According to the Web site corral.net, where a Web poster noted Lyons' death, Lyons was on his first operational assignment with the 160th and on his third deployment overall.
