Man's body is

found in lake

The body of a man in his 60s was pulled from Lake Sammamish on Wednesday, according to Redmond police.

A woman who was standing on the dock of a local condominium community in the 3800 block of West Lake Sammamish Way reported seeing the body around 11:45 a.m., police said.

Redmond police Lt. Charlie Gorman said there were no obvious signs of violence.

Gorman said the body was that of a white male who was fully clothed.

The King County Medical Examiner's Office removed the body and may release the man's name and cause of death today, Gorman said.

The victim, 47, was hit several times and was taken to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, said Cathy Schrock, a spokeswoman for Federal Way police.

She said the two men were inside separate vehicles that parked parallel to each other in the 100 block of South 340th Street around 5:30 a.m., Schrock said.

They were talking to each other while in their cars when they had some sort of "dispute," Schrock said.

Condo residents called 911 after hearing a number of gunshots, she said.

The victim got out of his car and collapsed on the ground, where he was found by the first officers on the scene, according to Schrock. He was conscious and able to tell officers who had shot him, she said.

Police did not release the suspected shooter's name on Wednesday.

Port Orchard

Man accused of

child abuse is held

A former Port Orchard City Council member who was wanted for child molestation has been arrested after investigators discovered his wedding announcement in an Alabama newspaper, according to the Kitsap Sun.

Tye Christopher Moore, 38, disappeared late last year after he was charged with molesting an underage girl, the newspaper reported.

The Sun report said Port Orchard Police Detective E.J. Martin had been trying to track down Moore when he "Googled" the fugitive's name and found an announcement in The Shelby County Reporter listing the man's September marriage to a 34-year-old woman.

Moore was arrested in Helena, Ala., on Wednesday morning, Port Orchard Police Chief Al Townsend told the Sun said.

Moore, who served on the City Council in 2006 before he was convicted of theft and forgery that same year, will be extradited to Kitsap County to face charges, the newspaper reported.

WSU prof sues

over free speech

A Washington State University journalism professor is suing some administrators in federal court for violating his free-speech rights.

The lawsuit by David Demers contends that some WSU administrators punished him for proposing a plan in 2007 to improve the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication, which he called one of the poorest funded of its size in the nation.

WSU spokesman James Tinney said the university would defend its actions.

Demers also contends he was punished with poor performance reviews for writing a book that questions the commitment of universities to the free-speech rights of faculty and students. He wants the court to expunge the annual reviews, make appropriate salary adjustments, pay attorney fees and assess damages.

Olympia

Report links

health and grades

A report based on data from a health survey of the state's young people has found a direct connection between healthful living and good grades.

The review of the 2006 Healthy Youth Survey found that the more health risks a student has — such as smoking or not eating enough fruits and vegetables — the more likely he or she is to report grades of C's and below.

State education and health officials say about 10 percent of those with a single health risk factor are also at "academic risk." About 50 percent of those with six health risk factors are likely to be in academic trouble.

Other health risks that can affect grades include taking drugs or drinking alcohol, consuming two or more cans of soda a day, being depressed, watching too much TV and not getting enough sleep or exercise.

Anchorage

Housing homeless

alcoholics is focus

A conference on housing homeless alcoholics in Anchorage is looking at an example in Seattle that gives them a place off the street where they can continue to drink.

KTUU reports the conference this week is looking at a program called "housing first" to reduce the amount spent on jail and hospital resources.

The Seattle program says it costs about $14,000 a year to house each resident, compared to $86,000 when they were on the street.

The taxpayer-funded Seattle apartment building on Eastlake Avenue near Denny Way houses about 75 people and offers counseling and social services.

Downtown Emergency Service Center Director Bill Hobson says the average resident had been drinking to intoxication 24 out of every 30 days, but that has been reduced to 13 days.
