Snohomish County PUD to get $15.8M of federal stimulus

The utility estimates that 76 new "green" jobs will be created with the funds.

The Snohomish County Public Utility District (PUD) will receive $15.8 million in federal stimulus money to integrate new energy sources into its electrical grid and to better identify and respond to power outages. The utility estimates that 76 new "green" jobs will be created with the funds.

Neil Neroutsos, spokesman for the PUD, said that many new sources of energy, including tidal and geothermal, provide only intermittent electricity. The federal funding will allow the utility to capture those sources and integrate them into the existing supply grid, he said. The federal money will also allow the utility to develop "smart" meter technology to help customers manage power consumption, Neroutsos said.

The Snohomish PUD was one of only two Washington utilities to receive federal stimulus funds. The other grant was awarded to Spokane's Avista Utilities.
