King County closer to shutting animal shelters
Two Metropolitan King County Council members introduced legislation Monday calling on the county executive to close county animal shelters.
Two Metropolitan King County Council members introduced legislation Monday calling on the county executive to close county animal shelters and end animal-control services to suburban cities by April 1.
Julia Patterson and Bob Ferguson co-sponsored the legislation, which also calls for the executive to make recommendations by March 1 on other ways to provide animal control in unincorporated King County.
The council could vote on the measure Monday.
The proposal came the same day a critical county audit of King County Animal Care and Control was published. It found, among other things, that agency staff are poorly trained in a shelter-animal tracking system installed three years ago.
The resulting ineffective monitoring of animals' status, combined with gaps in management, can delay animal care and decisions on moving them out of the shelter, the audit found.
