Taproot Theatre director Scott Nolte says the playhouse sustained significant water and soot damage to its lobby and balcony in the fire that swept through several businesses on North 85th Avenue in Seattle's Greenwood neighborhood early Friday.

(Photos of the damage are posted on the group's Web site, www.taproottheatre.org.)

He said it's not yet clear whether the damage can be repaired in time for Taproot's upcoming holiday show, set to open Nov. 20.

"We're working fast and furiously to figure out what's next," said Nolte, who expressed gratitude to Seattle Children's Theatre for donating space for the final performances of Taproot's production of "Enchanted April" last weekend.

Four other businesses located in the building, which is owned by Taproot, were gutted in the blaze.
