The state Department of Transportation has released this video simulation of what a collapse of the Alaskan Way Viaduct might look like.

The state Department of Transportation has released this video simulation of what a collapse of the Alaskan Way Viaduct might look like.

The simulation, say transportation officials, is based on a 2007 state report that said there is a 1-in-10 chance that in the next 10 years an earthquake could cause parts of the viaduct and adjacent seawall to collapse.

The simulation was released, the state says, in response to a public-disclosure request.

The plan to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct with a tunnel has been a central issue in the Seattle mayor's race between Joe Mallahan and Mike McGinn.

Mallahan supports the tunnel project, while McGinn has built much of his campaign around his objections to the tunnel.
