Lawmakers want better forecasting for Green River

Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell and congressmen Dave Reichert and Adam Smith are asking the federal government for more help predicting possible flooding in the Green River Valley.

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON —

Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell and congressmen Dave Reichert and Adam Smith are asking the federal government for more help predicting possible flooding in the Green River Valley.

They have asked the Departments of Commerce and Interior to provide weather forecasting and river monitoring resources to the National Weather Service and U.S. Geological Survey.

The Corps of Engineers says there's a one-in-four chance of flooding this winter in Kent, Renton, Auburn and Tukwila because weakened abutment at the Howard Hanson Dam cannot hold a full reservoir.

Specifically the lawmakers are asking for better rainfall and water flow gauges at the dam, a mobile Doppler weather station and additional staff and computer modeling technology for forecasters.
