Southbound I-5 lanes reopen in Seattle shortly before 9 p.m.
The collector-distributor lanes of southbound I-5 were closed this afternoon, causing traffic backups downtown and aggravating the postgame Seahawks traffic.
The collector-distributor lanes of southbound I-5 were closed this afternoon, causing traffic backups downtown and aggravating the postgame Seahawks traffic.
A vehicle on I-5 hit a support post of an overhead sign structure at 2:35 p.m., causing "cracks throughout it," said spokeswoman Meghan Pembroke of the Washington State Department of Transportation. The state's online traffic map showed a southbound traffic jam of more than a mile around 6 p.m.
Football fans heading to the Eastside could not reach the collector-distributor lanes toward I-90 from the onramp near James Street.
Workers using a crane removed the sign structure, Pembroke said.
New signs will likely be installed in the near future requiring a temporary closure of the lane, she said.
