Insanity plea likely in Kitsap County slaying

The lawyer for a Kitsap County teenager charged with killing stabbing an elderly neighbor to death says he will likely plead not guilty by reason of insanity.

The Associated Press

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. —

The lawyer for a Kitsap County teenager charged with killing stabbing an elderly neighbor to death says he will likely plead not guilty by reason of insanity.

Defense lawyer Bryan G. Hershman told a judge Friday he's waiting for a psychological and psychiatric evaluation of his client, 18-year-old Daniel J. Mustard. Hershman says the evaluation will probably take at least another month.

Mustard previously pleaded not guilty to aggravated first-degree murder in the stabbing of Ruby Andrews, his 87-year-old neighbor, during a robbery at her home in Manchester on April 5. If convicted he faces a mandatory life prison term without parole.
