Pierce deputies kill man, say he drove at them

A man has been shot to death by Pierce County sheriff's deputies after he reportedly tried to run them down.

PUYALLUP, Wash. —

A man has been shot to death by Pierce County sheriff's deputies after he reportedly tried to run them down.

Detective Ed Troyer says the 30-year-old Spanaway man was being sought on a warrant charging him with assault on a child.

Troyer says the man reportedly was running other cars off the road Saturday, clipping three with a 1992 Ford Explorer on South Hill, south of Puyallup.

Troyer says deputies stopped the man with a maneuver in which he broadsided a patrol car. Then, the detective says, he backed up, shifted into forward and gunned the engine as he drove toward two deputies who opened fire. The man died at the scene.

Both deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave, a standard procedure in law enforcement shootings.
