Defending Pac-10 champs get back to work

The Washington Huskies are back to defend their Pac-10 conference championship with a reloaded backcourt - and a huge void in the paint.

AP Sports Writer

SEATTLE —

The Washington Huskies are back to defend their Pac-10 conference championship with a reloaded backcourt - and a huge void in the paint.

Coach Lorenzo Romar said Wednesday the team that will begin practice in two days has only two of five starting positions settled.

Quincy Pondexter, the team's only senior, will fill departed star Jon Brockman's leadership and frontcourt presence.

And Isaiah Thomas will start at shooting guard in his follow-up to a wondrous debut season. He was the league's freshman of the year.

Romar says Abdul Gaddy isn't necessarily the starting point guard. Not yet, anyway.

The 6-foot-3 Gaddy was the Washington Class 4A player of the year last spring. He was rated by most scouts as the second-best point guard in the country.
