Gov. Gregoire declares emergency for Naches slide

NACHES, Wash. —

Gov. Chris Gregoire has declared an emergency in Yakima County because of the landslide that blocked a quarter mile of Highway 410 and forced the Naches River to flood about 25 homes.

The proclamation Tuesday will speed up state assistance and allow the state Transportation Department to seek federal emergency funds to repair the damage from Sunday's slide.

Transportation Secretary Paula Hammond says work began Tuesday on a temporary detour for local residents.

Transportation Department officials say it's too soon to say when they might reopen Highway 410. A 90-mile detour is available through Mount Rainier National Park and Cayuse Pass. With winter snow likely to close Chinook Pass soon, Highway 410 could be closed for the season.
