Island fares may increase

Ferry fares to Lummi Island could go up under terms of a new lease being negotiated between the Lummi tribe and Whatcom County.

Ferry fares to Lummi Island could go up under terms of a new lease being negotiated between the Lummi tribe and Whatcom County, The Bellingham Herald reports.

An ambitious tribal plan also envisions a new location for the mainland ferry dock that serves the small island. The current mainland ferry dock is on tribal land at Gooseberry Point.

The tribe has submitted plans to the county for that land, which would provide a sheltered moorage area and habitat for birds and fish while protecting the shoreline from winter-storm surges.
