Hostage standoff ends in surrender

A man surrendered to sheriff's deputies Saturday afternoon after he forced his way into a house, shot another man and stayed in the house while a mother and daughter hid in a closet, the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office reported.

Deputies responded to a 911 call in the Navy Yard City neighborhood of Bremerton from a woman who said her former boyfriend was at the door of her home and she was afraid for herself and her 4-year-old daughter.

Instead of obeying an officer's order that he take his hands out of his pockets and leave the front door, the man kicked the door in, pulled a handgun, entered the house and fired several shots, Deputy Scott Wilson reported. A man escaped the house with a gunshot wound to his arm and was transported to a hospital.

After talking to a crisis negotiator, the gunman surrendered to officers. The woman and her daughter were unharmed. A SWAT team later discovered about 60 marijuana plants growing in the basement.
