2 Fort Lewis-based soldiers killed in Philippines

FORT LEWIS, Wash. —

The Defense Department says two Fort Lewis-based soldiers have been killed in a bomb attack in the southern Philippines.

Defense officials said Thursday that 37-year-old Sgt. 1st Class Christopher D. Shaw of Markham, Ill., and 26-year-old Staff Sgt. Jack M. Martin III of Bethany, Okla., died Tuesday on Jolo Island from the detonation of an improvised explosive device.

They were assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group at Fort Lewis.
