Seattle Children's Hospital says it made a medication error that cost a teenager his life.
A pain patch was prescribed for the boy because he was autistic and could not take pills or liquid medicine. He died overnight of a narcotics overdose.
As a result of the death investigation, the hospital announced Tuesday it has changed the way it prescribes and administer patches with the drug Fentanyl (FEN'-tuh-nil).
Fifteen-year-old Michael Blankenship had four teeth removed at the hospital on March 9. That night his mother applied the pain patch prescribed by the hospital's dentist. The boy was found dead the next morning.
The mother, Tammy Jarbo-Blankenship, has filed a claim against the hospital.
