Bellingham teacher is state teacher of the year

A Bellingham High School chemistry teacher has been named the 2010 Washington state teacher of the year.

The Associated Press

SEATTLE —

A Bellingham High School chemistry teacher has been named the 2010 Washington state teacher of the year.

State schools Superintendent Randy Dorn announced Jamie Yoos' recognition on Monday at a ceremony at the Experience Music Project in Seattle.

Yoos was praised for a hands-on style. He produces video podcasts of lectures for students to view at home so they can maximize lab time in class. Besides chemistry, he teaches bicycle maintenance where students are asked to solve problems, communicate and use technology.

As Washington teacher of the year, Yoos will serve as an ambassador for the teaching profession while maintaining his duties at Bellingham High School.

He will be considered for national Teacher of the Year.
