BLAINE, Wash. —

A man bleeding from his wrists was arrested at the Canadian border and was being held on a fugitive warrant in the death of his wife in California, police and customs officials said Monday.

John Ligon Levin, 44, was arrested Saturday at the Peace Arch crossing in Blaine as he tried to enter Canada, said customs officers and Sgt. Tom Lorenz of the Glendale, Calif., police department.

Authorities said he was driving a 2009 Volkswagen EOS convertible with a license plate listed in a missing person alert concerning the Glendale death of his 35-year-old wife, Michelle Levin.

Levin, whose wrists were bleeding at the time of his arrest, was expected to appear Tuesday in Whatcom County Superior Court to face a request for extradition to face murder and animal cruelty charges in California, sheriff's Deputy Jeff Parks said.

He was being unable to appear in court Monday because of medical problems, Parks said.

Neighbors told Glendale police last week that they had not seen the Levins for days, and officers on Friday found the decomposing bodies of Michelle Levin and the couple's small dog and no sign of her husband, Lorenz said.

The cause of the woman's death remained undetermined Monday pending an autopsy but appeared to be from domestic violence, he added.
