Seattle Police's bomb dog dies after surgery

The Seattle Police Department's first and only "bomb dog" has died.

The Associated Press

SEATTLE —

The Seattle Police Department's first and only "bomb dog" has died.

Freddie became ill Saturday morning and was rushed to the vet by his partner, Officer Craig Williamson. The vet decided Freddie needed emergency surgery. He died a few hours after his spleen was removed.

Williamson and Freddie have worked together since July 2003. They conducted bomb sweeps and evidence searches for crimes involving firearms and explosives.

In 2008, the Seattle Police Foundation honored Freddie and his partner.

Seattle Police say Freddie was nearing retirement age but his service time was extended because of his special abilities and willingness to work.
