Highway traffic in Washington takes a break over Labor Day weekend

It might have been the weather, the economy or the price of gas, but there were fewer cars on some major highways over Labor Day weekend, according to the Washington state Department of Transportation.
On Interstate 90 across Snoqualmie Pass, there was a 9 percent decrease from Labor Day 2008, according to the DOT.
Traffic on Highway 2 over Stevens Pass dropped 22 percent, or about 6,500 fewer vehicles over 2008 from Friday through Monday.
However, holiday traffic on Interstate 5 near the U.S.-Canadian border showed a small increase over 2008. The DOT counted 129,700 vehicles on this stretch of freeway from Friday through Monday, an increase of 3,400 vehicles (or 3 percent) from Labor Day weekend 2008.
On I-5 south to the Lewis County line there were 258,000 vehicles, a decrease of 14,000 vehicles, or 6 percent. On Sunday, the numbers on that freeway dropped 10 percent.
